Cledis Randall (Rennie) Whitaker, age 68 of Marion, passed away on Wednesday June 14, 2017 at the Marion General Hospital.
Cledis entered into this world on October 24, 1948 to Cledis and Lizzie (Prater) Whitaker in Prestonsburg, KY. On August 28, 1970, he married Jacqueline (Bailey) Whitaker in Marion, OH.
He proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict during the years of 1968 to 1970. He worked at the Marion Power Shovel for 28 years and retired from the Sypris Corporation after 17 years. Cledis belonged to the American Legion #584, where he was a past commander. Also, he belonged to the VFW #7201, 40/8, Veterans Court, Veterans Association, the FOPA, the CPAAA, the Marion Honor Guard, and the Rod Knockers Car Club.
Cledis was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He mentored many veterans and was the biggest supporter for his kids and grandchildren with everything they did. He loved spending time with wife, kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed going on vacations, flowers and gardening. His caring and loving heart was present through his many contributions to his community. He helped with the Memorial Day Parade, Veterans Court, Marion City K-9 Unit. Also, he helped with veterans that needed a hand or just needed an ear to listen. He will truly be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father: Cledis Whitaker; a brother: Billy Whitaker; a sister: Sandra Kay Moore; a nephew: Gary Lee Bailey; and a brother-in-law: Steve Caudill.
Cledis is going to be missed by his mother: Lizzie (Prater) Whitaker; his wife: Jacqueline (Bailey) Whitaker ; a daughter: Tammy (John) Miller; a son: Davie (Dorothy) Whitaker; brothers: Clarence (Deb) Whitaker, David Whitaker and Roger Whitaker; sisters: Karen (Tim) Caldwell, Judy Law, Marlene (Jim) Oberier and Kathy (Joe) Benson; sister-in-law: Diane Casto; brother-in-law: Gary Bailey and Terry Moore; grandchildren: Tiffany (Corey) Large, Kyle , Stacee and Samantha Whitaker and Mitchel Wallingford; great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and Friends can come to honor Cledis's life on Monday June 19, 2017 starting at 12pm-2pm and again at 4pm-8pm at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday June 20, 2017 starting at 11am at the funeral home with Pastor Dale Baker officiating. Burial will follow service at the Chapel Heights Memory Gardens with Marion Honor Guard performing the Military service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Veterans Court or the Marion City K-9 unit.
