Freda Fuqua Obituary

Freda Rae Fuqua, 91, of Marion made her way to heaven on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Brookdale Marion where she had resided since 2014.
She was born August 21, 1926 in Massac County, Illinois to the late Lydia R. (Hinners) Fick and Rayman E. Fick. Freda was the middle of seven children and raised on the family farm in southern Illinois. She graduated from Joppa High School in 1944, the first in her family to do so. She honed her secretarial skills at Draughon's Business College in Paducah, Kentucky and got her first secretarial work with Ace Mfg. in St. Louis. She met C.L. Fuqua, Jr. at church and they courted by correspondence during his service in the Navy. Upon his return home, they were married on January 4, 1946, sharing 64 years before his homegoing on September 11, 2010.
Freda will be remembered as the consummate pastor's wife. She was the faithful partner of Pastor Fuqua during his ministerial training at Bible Baptist Seminary in Texas and his ministry at Columbus Baptist Temple and Grace Baptist Church in Marion where she served as the secretary for 30 years. She suffered a stroke in 1992, but her life was spared which allowed her to see one more grandchild, nine more great grandchildren and her great-great granddaughter be born.
At home, she had a green thumb where her gardens, plants, flowers and grapevines were always beautiful. She and Pastor Fuqua enjoyed going out to eat and had the opportunity to travel to see family and visit friends in the ministry. Though frugal to herself, she had a generous spirit and was always willing to help those in need. She had a strong sense of fairness and loved her sweet treats. She also enjoyed keeping in touch with her family and friends through phone calls and letters.
Mrs. Fuqua is survived by her daughters, Jan Sloan of Marion and Joy (Ken) Roshon of Safford, Arizona; grandchildren, Janell (Allan) O'Neil, Janna (Bryan) Mengerink, JoRae (Matt) Richards, Jay (Angie) Sloan, Nathanael (Jennifer) Roshon, and Luke Roshon; great grandchildren, Allyssa (Kurtis) Betker, Britton (Kaela) O'Neil, Kendra (Sean) Carroo, Carson, Courtney, and Kyra Mengerink, Raeleigh and Parker Richards, and Clayton and Tucker Sloan; great-great granddaughter, Wren Betker; siblings, Loyd Fick, Lowanda Farris, Mary (Noel) Collins, and John Fick; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by son-in-law, Jerry Sloan; great granddaughter, Kaylynn Richards; and siblings, Verna Gurley and Ed Fick.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20 at 1:30 pm at Grace Baptist Church, 1560 Marion-Marysville Road, Marion with Pastor Nick Worden officiating. Family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 11:30 am - 1:20 pm. Burial will follow the service in Caledonia Cemetery.
Memorial donations are encouraged to be given to Grace Baptist Church (for world missions) or Capital City Hospice who gave extraordinary care in her final days. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.boydbornfuneralhome.com.
