Gwendolyn Lucylle Zieg, 98 years and 11 months of age, died peacefully on October 14, 2018, at the Kingston Residence in Marion. Her family is thankful "she is now in a better place" in the promised room prepared for her (John 14:2) in the Father's mansion.
Lucylle, her preferred name, was born Lucyle Harriet Roessner in Allen County, Ohio, November 22, 1919. Following an auto accident in which her mother died, she and two siblings were placed in an orphanage in Lima. On January 12, 1925 she was adopted by doting new parents, Thomas J. and Belle C. (Soules) Ballenger of Marion, receiving the name Gwendolyn Lucylle. She graduated with the Marion Harding High School class of 1937 and steadfastly considered Marion her lifetime home. On May 29, 1940 she married Merle V. Zieg, a Marion City Fireman, in Greenup, Kentucky; they were married 55 years when he died in 1995. She was always proud to be a firefighter's wife. Their son, Rev. Peter J. Zieg, is married to the former Judy Seyerle, they reside in Orlando, Florida.
Lucylle worked 10 years in the office of Marion County Treasurer, Marion Hinklin; served two terms on the Marion YMCA Board; volunteered at Marion General Hospital; and was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church since 1942. She enjoyed her neighbors on Homer Street for 70 years, and many afternoons of bridge and conversation with a close circle of friends and former school classmates. She will be fondly remembered for always mailing cheery cards, notes and letters for all occasions and holidays to her family and friends.
Besides her son, she is survived by two grandsons, Mark (Laura) of Kissimmee, Florida; and Scott (Elizabeth) of Portland, Oregon; two great grandsons, Jonathan (22) and Chris (19) of Kissimmee; sister-in-law Eileen Reasner of Celina. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, great granddaughter Marian, sister Marcella (Bob) Walker, and brother Bob (Eileen) Reasner.
The family is grateful to the staff of Kingston Residence and Capital City Hospice for the care and support she was shown in her last years.
Visitation will be Friday, November 23, 1:30-2:30 pm at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home 122 W. Columbia St., in Marion, where a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 pm, followed by burial at the Marion Cemetery.
