Avonell J. Tillis (née Bailey), age 98, of Noblesville, IN, passed away on January 7, 2021 due to complications of COVID 19.
Avonell was born June 8, 1922 in Marion, OH, the daughter of Merril and Wanda (McRill) Bailey. Avonell worked as a bookkeeper for Marion Power Shovel until her marriage to Harry C. Tillis of Marion, OH on August 19, 1950. They moved to Milwaukee, WI where they lived for over 50 years. She raised her children, became involved in the PTA, rising to the position of State Vice-President, and later worked as a teacher’s aide in the Milwaukee Public Schools until her retirement in 1987. Harry passed away on August 19, 2009.
Avonell loved to travel. She and Harry took dozens of trips around the United States, visiting historical sites, national parks, and her far-flung family. She also loved listening to opera, reading historical novels, and studying British history.
In addition to her parents and husband, Avonell was predeceased by eight siblings: Roy (Lola) Bailey, Valeska (Rodney) Wright, Dorothy (Robert) Pace, Donald (Alice) Bailey, Loran (Betty) Bailey, Richard Bailey, Darlene (Paul) Woodrum, and Phyllis (Clayton) Simpson; and by her son-in-law, Joseph M. Moran.
She is survived by her daughters: Jennifer Moran of Green Bay, WI and Wendy (Joseph) Schlueter of Noblesville, IN; grandchildren Andrew (Meghan) Schlueter of Xenia, OH and Stephanie Schlueter of Baltimore, MD; her brother William (Linda) Bailey of Salt Lake City, UT; Paul Woodrum of Marion, OH; Joyce Bailey of Marion, OH; and many many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the whole staff at Wellbrooke of Westfield in Westfield, IN for the excellent care they gave Avonell in her last years.
