Larry Mumper Obituary

Senator Larry A. Mumper, formerly from Marion, passed away March 21, 2026 at the age of 88 in Englewood, Florida. He was born July 25, 1937, in Perrysville, Ohio to the late Irvin A. and Hazel (Minard) Mumper. He was a 1955 graduate of Loudonville High School and was very active in athletics and music.

Larry received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio Northern University and his Masters Degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph with continuing education courses from Bowling Green State University. He retired in 1992 after a 30 year career teaching Science, Math, Chemistry and Physics and also coached basketball and cross country. His passion for politics led him to serve on Marion City Council for 3 years serving as president pro tempore and County Commissioner for 3 years before becoming State Senator for the 26th District. He served in the Ohio Senate from Dec. 1997 through 2008. Larry served as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee. At the National level he was elected to Vice Chair of the National Conference of State Legislative Ag and Rural Development committees. Being conscious about the taxpayers, Larry worked to keep the budget low which earned him five "Bulldog of the Treasury" awards.

Being civic minded, Larry's various memberships included the Elgin Retired Teachers Education Association, Ohio Education Association (retired), National Education Association, Masonic Lodge, NRA (life member), Ohio Farm Bureau, Life Member of the BPOE Marion Elks 32, Moose Lodge 2866, VFW Post 7201, past member of the Marion Cemetery Board, Marion County Republican Club, YMCA, Charter Member of the Marion Evening Lions Club, and the US Open Commission.

He is survived by his wife, Karyle, of 49 years (3 months from 50 years), daughter, Julie (Wells) Coalfleet: son, Gregg, and 4 grandchildren: Wells III & Carter Coalfleet & Sam & Kacey Mumper along with many nieces and nephews. His son, Bradley (Andy), preceded him in death. Four sisters, Jean (Paul) Kauffman, Mary Lou (Wayne) Wachtel, Joanne (Kenneth) Utterback and Elaine (William) Vastine preceded him in death. A special and loving companion, "Maggie", an English Cream Golden Retriever also survives.

Over the years Larry and Karyle spent time traveling, scuba diving for 30 years in the Caribbean, boating on Lake Erie and spending time with family. In 2022 he and his wife, Karyle, became Florida residents and moved to Englewood, Florida, after being "snowbirds" for 14 years.
