Larry Gene Prater

Larry Gene Prater, age 65 of Marion, OH, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at his residence.

Larry was born on March 12, 1955 to Richard and Mildred (Southward) Prater in Marion, OH. 

Larry served our country in the United States Navy as a Radiomen from 1974 to 1978 and was in the Navy Reserves for 16 years before retiring with full benefits.  He was also a meter reader for Ohio Edison for 19 years.  Larry was an avid fisherman and loved going to Port Clinton, OH to go catfishing with his son Brian and other family members.  Some of his most favorite memories were up at the cabins along Sandusky Bay, where he was surrounded by multiple family members for an entire week of fishing and playing poker.  Larry’s true pastime love was deer hunting.  Larry’s most peaceful times were out in the woods deer hunting and enjoying the quietness of the outdoors.  Everyone that knew Larry knew him as a kind-hearted, loving, loyal, and honorable man.  Larry will truly be missed by family and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his father: Richard Prater.

Those who will cherish his memories include his mother: Mildred Prater of Marion, OH; his son: Brian Prater of Prospect, OH; his daughter: Cynthia L. Johns of Greencastle, PA; his brothers: Ron Prater of Marion, OH, Richard Prater of Fredericktown, OH and Chris Prater of Pataskala, OH; his two granddaughters and two grandsons; and his three great grandchildren.

Friends and family may come to honor Larry’s life on Friday, November 13, 2020 from 6pm to 8 pm at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home, were face masks and social distancing is required and only 25 people allowed in the funeral at a time. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2020 starting at 10am at the funeral home with Marion Area Veterans Council to perform military honors.  Donations may be given in Larry’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.  The Boyd-Born Funeral Home is honored to be of service to the Prater family.
